A Rational Approach to AI in UX Research: Synthetic Users, Risks and Other Applications

As with any major technological advancement, AI is evolving fast, while legislation and regulations are falling behind. According to User Interviews’ “The State of User Research 2024” report, more than 50% of UX Researchers utilize the technology to optimize parts of their work. Meanwhile, our colleagues and stakeholders also use AI to conduct fast-paced research but sometimes with no complete perspective of the risks.

In this talk:

  • We’ll focus on practical applications and tips on where this tech fits in the research process.
  • We’ll discuss the drawbacks, risks, and external factors we don’t have control over but must be considered.
  • We’ll zoom in on synthetic users through some case studies to observe in parallel with traditional user research methods.

Most discussions about AI in UX only briefly scratch the surface of considerations like ethics and biases, data reliability, and the cultural and business context of the specific product and its user base which are fundamental to the research process.

AI has catalyzed a new chapter in the democratization of research that we weren’t entirely prepared for. To mitigate future risks for our business and users’ experience, we must lead with knowledge and critical thinking, and advocate for best practices.
