GUI Design or Four Stories from the Discworld

If you’re wondering why applying the recommendations to increase your click rate isn’t getting results, you might be missing the basics. If you believe you know enough about type, illustration, composition, and interaction, but get lost in the details, you may be missing a system. If you can’t guess what comes next after skeuomorphism, flat design, neomorphism and glassmorphism, you may be lacking vision.

Through a series of exercises and an active discussion, the workshop will introduce you to the four main aspects of the graphic user interface.

1. Typography and readability:

  • Balance formula or how do letter size, line width and line spacing depend on each other?
  • Macro typography or how do the alignment, grouping and composition of the text block affect the perception?
  • Features of legibility or how do lettercase, weight and style can change the impact of any typeface?

2. Images and symbols:

  • Frame space or how do responsiveness, geometry and perspective affect illustration?
  • Frame content or how do framing the image, silhouette and wallpaper change the image?
  • Iconography or how do the recognizability, associativity and concreteness of a symbol affect perception?

3. Space and composition:

  • Imprints of perception, or how do mass, similarity, and pulling give different meaning to the image
  • Graphic gravity or how do individual, internal and external centrifugal and centripetal forces order space?
  • Areas and grids or what do a hamburger and a screen have in common?

4. Function and interaction:

  • The metamorphoses of form or why and how do we need to use the different states of interactivity?
  • The main characters of interaction or how do the link, button, pointer and scroll help our actions?
  • Behavioral stereotypes and A/B tests or how to look critically at the information that floods us on the Internet?

The workshop will be most useful to product, UX and UI designers with some experience but also to anyone tempted by the user interface and wishing to navigate the specifics of design for an interactive environment.

Don’t forget to take your favorite analog and digital sketching, design and prototyping tools with you!

* Even if you’re not a fan of Terry Pratchett, you’ve probably heard that, in the past, people believed that the earth was a flat disk that rested on the backs of four elephants, one in each of the four main directions. Some still believe that…

This workshop will be delivered in Bulgarian.
